I was pre-diabetic with high cholesterol, overweight, and my clothes didn’t fit me the way I wanted them to. In August 2016, I decided to change the way I looked and felt. Those who aren’t familiar with my story I’ve lost 50lbs and I feel the best that I’ve ever felt in my life. Since then, people who have been impressed with my transformation want to know how I did it. In the beginning, I had little knowledge on how to eat right so to get me started I hired a nutritionist, Alex Concepcion, RD, LD. Working with Alex was the best thing I’ve done and it was entirely worth it. If you’re not sure how to incorporate fitness and healthy eating into your lifestyle having a nutritionist by your side is a great way to help you get you started. Here I will tell you the reasons.
I checked in with Alex weekly. I’d send him my weight and progress pictures of my front, back, and sides. He’d make any necessary adjustments depending on what my results were for that week. Weekly check-ins helped tremendously! Not only did it help keep track of my progress it also pushed me through the hunger pains and sweet cravings throughout the week. It prevented me from cheating especially the closer it got to weigh-in day because my cravings were stronger. I also did not want to disappoint Alex and especially myself.
I did take a break for a bit because of work and I felt that I could do it on my own. At that time we were five months in I still meal prepped and weighed myself weekly. However, I started eating out more and making less healthy choices. I was slowly slipping back into my old habits allowing my cravings to take over. I realized then that I still had so much more to learn and that I wasn’t ready to do this alone. That’s where Alex came in and he kept me accountable.
Finding What Works
Everybody’s body type is different. What may work for me may not work for you and vice versa. The internet is saturated with an overwhelming amount of information on fitness as a whole. This can get frustrating very easily especially when you have little to no knowledge about nutrition. I removed that burden off of my back by following and testing out the meal plans that Alex put together for me. In time, we were able to see what foods and portions worked. It was very important to be honest during the progress checks so that Alex could adjust my calories/foods appropriately to keep me on track to get the results that I wanted.
Having strong moral support is paramount when embarking on a journey like this especially if you feel that you don’t have enough will power to fight off any bad influences or are around discouraging people. If you feel this way you definitely need to change your environment. As with any goal, it’s easier when you’re in the right environment. Along with supporting friends and family, Alex was a great addition to that moral support. There were times I would beat myself up because the weekly results didn’t work in my favor. For example, as I was getting leaner I wasn’t losing 2 to 3 pounds a week as often as I was. It was a pound or 1/2 pound. I would get frustrated and there were times I wanted to give up. Alex celebrated every ounce that I lost. It showed me to appreciate the small accomplishments through the journey which eventually compounded into the big result. When I would get impatient he reminded me that this was a lifestyle and not a fad diet…a marathon and not a sprint. This also kept me focused on the day-to-day tasks that needed to get done rather than just only focusing on the end goal.
I hope these points will help you in making a decision to get a nutritionist if you’re serious about changing your lifestyle. If you’re not sure how to incorporate fitness and healthy eating into your lifestyle having a nutritionist by your side is a great way to get started. Not only will a nutritionist provide you with an eating plan and keep you accountable a nutritionist will also provide the support needed throughout the journey. You’ll also get to know your body and realize why certain diets/strategies didn’t work in the past. My experience of having a nutritionist was entirely worth it and seeing how it worked for me you will be able to discover how it will work for you.
